Rodent Control in Westchester
Westchester is an unincorporated area about ten miles west of downtown Miami. It counted over 56,000 people in the 2020 census, after the old University Park area was folded into it. FIU's main campus sits in its northwest corner, and you'll find the Westchester sign on Bird Road just west of the Palmetto Expressway.
It's mostly single-family homes and a lot of them have been in the same family for decades. Calls from here are mostly roof rats in the attic and mice in the garage, with some student rentals near FIU mixed in.
Houses that have been added onto
Plenty of Westchester houses have grown over the years: a family room out back, a garage turned into a bedroom, a small apartment added for a grandparent. Each addition leaves a seam where a new roof was tied into the old one, and those seams open up. Add a mango tree or a palm next to the house and the rats have a way up and a way in.
- Roof seams where additions meet the original house
- Converted garages with gaps at the old door opening
- Fruit trees and palms against the house
- AC line holes stuffed with foam
What the provider does
Expect a look at the whole roofline and the attic, traps along the rafters and runways, then sealing once activity drops. If the garage has droppings, they'll check the garage door seal and anything stored on the floor. Rat control and rodent exclusion explain both parts.
If you're near FIU and renting, tell the landlord. If you own a rental, the provider can work with your tenant to set up access.
