In Miami the rodent behind most of these calls is the roof rat. It climbs palms, fruit trees and power lines, and it ends up in attics, soffits and garages. Why rats do so well in Miami

Three things work in their favor here. The first is trees. Palm trees, mango and avocado trees, sea grape hedges and big shade trees grow right up against houses all over the county. UF/IFAS lists palm skirts, attics, soffits and hollow trees among the places roof rats nest, and fruit gives them food on the same branch. A neighborhood with old trees, like South Miami or Palmetto Bay, gives rats a highway from yard to yard without touching the ground.

The second is water. Canals, lakes, the bay and the river run through and behind thousands of lots. UF/IFAS notes roof rats will burrow along canal banks and travel around 150 yards for food or water. The National Weather Service in Miami counts the wet season from May 15 to October 15, the months when most of the year's rain falls. Places like Cutler Bay and Miami Lakes are built around water.

The third is buildings. Older houses in the Upper Eastside and North Miami have had decades of additions and re-roofs, and every seam is a possible gap. Newer towers in Brickell and Aventura have trash rooms, garages and pipe chases that let rodents move from the ground floor to the top. Add a hurricane that loosens soffits and tile, and you have a lot of open doors.
