Miami Rodent Questions and Answers
These are the questions people ask us most often. If yours isn't here, call. The guides go into more detail on attics, identification and rodent-proofing.
Questions and Answers
Are you a pest control company?
No. We're a referral line. We connect you with a licensed company, and that company does the work and sets the price.
Which rodent do most Miami homes have?
Roof rats, by a wide margin. UF/IFAS describes the Norway rat as rare in Florida. House mice show up too, mostly in kitchens, garages and condo units.
How do I know if it's rats or mice?
Compare the droppings. Roof rat ones are black and banana-shaped, 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, per UF/IFAS. Mouse droppings look more like dark grains of rice. See rats vs. mice.
How small a gap can they use?
The CDC says some rodents can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime.
Is poison safe with kids and pets?
Only in locked, tamper-resistant bait stations, which is what UF/IFAS recommends for roof rats. Many providers avoid bait indoors so rodents don't die inside walls. Tell the provider about kids and pets.
Do the plug-in ultrasonic devices work?
UF/IFAS says there's no evidence they work on roof rats.
What should I do about droppings?
Don't sweep or vacuum. Wear gloves, soak them with disinfectant or a bleach solution for about five minutes, wipe up with paper towels and bag everything. See rodent cleanup.
What about iguanas and squirrels?
Not on this line. A wildlife company handles those.
Can I get a phone quote?
Not from us. The company prices the work once they've seen the place.
Is there a guarantee?
Not from us. Ask the provider about their warranty terms, if they offer one.
